Social media empowers individuals who use AAC to connect and communicate with people around the world. However, the online world can be intimidating for individuals new to social media as personal safety and privacy are legitimate concerns.

In this session, the author shares personal experiences with using social media to demonstrate how social connections can be made online and how these connections can lead to in-person opportunities. Four of the most commonly used platforms – email, blogs, Twitter and Facebook – are explained in simplified terms and using real examples. Safety tips are discussed.

By addressing safety and privacy concerns with using social media and by sharing the author’s personal experiences, this presentation aims to encourage participants to consider using social media to connect with others and to further expand their world.
