Students with communication, intellectual and physical challenges have tremendous literacy needs, including reading age respectful, meaningful books on a regular basis. Students need access to a wide range of texts that contain rich content, while still being at the appropriate language level. This high paced session will focus on solutions by demonstrating a wide range of book resources, iPad apps, a framework for selecting books, and strategies for writing simplified books. Quick and easy adaptations, from duct tape to two-switch scanning, will also be shared to make books accessible for students with complex communication, intellectual and physical disabilities. Strategies and lessons for using simplified texts during reading instruction will be shared.
