In this presentation, we will describe the result of working towards the goals of making the PODD material easy accessible. Our aim has been to reduce the time it takes to learn the technical management, yet keeping the necessary individual adaptation options and follow the user’s language development. All this to meet the main goal of giving people access to good AAC solutions when needed.
There is common knowledge and experience within the AAC field about many of the obstacles of getting the AAC systems to work. Both caretakers and professionals meet challenges related to time-consuming preparations, the need of learning and managing technical equipment, and lack of human resources.
We wanted to make the access to AAC material easier, and this has been our approach in our work with the PODD material. In cooperation with Gayle Porter, we have created a package containing ready-made PODD-books to start with, and a software to make the individual adaptations of the PODD books a lot easier and less time-consuming than earlier.
When making a simplified access to the PODD material, we wanted to ensure that the principles from the PODD methodology are kept. In cooperation with Gayle Porter, we have defined some parts to be editable for individual adaptations, and other parts that cannot be changed. This makes it both easier and safer for parents and professionals to work with the material. They don’t need to be afraid to make changes that possibly can destroy the methodology or the pragmatic navigation.
