An interagency collaboration between the Indiana University Bloomington Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences (IUB SPHS) and the Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) has grown and expanded from AAC implementation in one self-contained special education classroom to a summer camp experience open to children district wide who attend community-based classrooms. Camp Connections was developed to provide individuals with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities with a traditional summer camp experience while also targeting their communication goals. This interagency camp provided training for IUB SPHS graduate students and MCCSC special education staff in a variety of evidence-based practices. A camp overview and perceived benefits/outcomes from post camp interviews with parents of the children and graduate students will be discussed, as well as recommendations for future camp week experiences and extensions to the original project.
