When you’re working with a bilingual AAC user, it may be tempting to provide AAC only in the school language, especially if the school team has limited knowledge of the home language. However, if the student does not have a way to communicate in his home language, his social/emotional growth may be negatively impacted. When family members cannot engage in communication as models, language development in both home and school languages may suffer. Bilingual supports, strategies and tips from the dedicated people involved in creating/designing Prologuo2Go, WordPower Español and Puente 84 (from PRC) will be presented. Through case studies and device demonstrations, we will examine ways to support social, linguistic, and strategic skills to help our AAC users thrive in bilingual or disparate dual language environments.
