A robust core-based vocabulary system has been considered essential when working towards developing language and achieving spontaneous novel message generation for many individuals relying on AAC. However, we have found it is difficult for many of our context-dependent communicators to develop functional communication using a core word approach when intervention is mostly incidental; and when direct, explicit instruction is not available on a systematic, regular basis. In this presentation we will discuss our experience working in a consultative service delivery model with preschool and school-age clients functioning at context-dependent communication levels. We will share core word vocabulary sets that were used, intervention outcomes, and environmental and individual barriers to success. We will also describe vocabulary sets that we used when the core words approach failed
