Research Proceedings

Research Proceedings is the book with all the papers from the Reseach Symposium

Research Proceedings 1990 coverAugmentative and alternative communication is a complex field, involving a wide range of communication systems and users with a variety of characteristics and needs, living under a wide range of environmental conditions, and researchers and practitioners from many different disciplines. The biennial research proceedings are on average a 300-page volume containing 28 papers by 34 researchers from 12 countries, making it one of the most varied and comprehensive collections of papers on augmentative and alternative communication published. The contributors review and discuss a large diversity of issues, including theory development, evidence-based practice, multicultural issues, cognition and literacy related to augmentative and alternative communication, and facilitated communication.

The process of interaction in non-speech communication is very different from interactions with spoken language. In order to take both the hindrances and the possibilities of persons who need alternative means of communication into account, it is not enough for practitioners to know how things should be done; they need to understand why things should be done one way rather than another, an understanding that must be based on models of the communication process and the underlying processes that apply to non-speech communication. By focussing on why rather than how, the present collection represents an important source of information and inspiration for both researchers and practitioners within the field of augmentative and alternative communication.

Research proceedings are available from the Buy Online section.
