About the ISAAC Site

ISAAC (International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication) is an organization devoted to advancing the field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). The Mission of ISAAC is to improve communication and the quality of life for people with severe communication impairments. ISAAC does this by advancing the field of AAC, facilitating information exchange and focusing attention on work in the field.

ISAAC runs conferences, workshops and educational services around the world. It also publishes a peer reviewed journal, and other publications focusing on the field of augmentative communication. The ISAAC list serve and forum (located on the ISAAC website) offer opportunities to connect with AAC researchers, providers, families and users globally.

The ISAAC web site is divided into six main sections:

  • About ISAAC
    Visit this section to join ISAAC, get ISAAC news, listings of chapters and committees, and more.
  • About AAC
    This section provides further information about AAC, and links to other resources on the web
  • Publications
    ISAAC provides an online service which allows members to order publications, proceedings, and products. Information is also available for non-members.
  • Research
    This section is being developed so that visitors can learn more about the latest research and developments.
  • Events 
    In the Events section you will find a calendar of ISAAC sponsored events, conferences, courses, and other programs related to A.A.C.
  • Interactive!
    ISAAC provides an opportunity to join in on our online forums or list serve - to share your news and views.

Accessibility Features

The ISAAC site has been designed to ensure accessibility and usability. This site includes the following design features to improve accessibility:

Cascading Style Sheets

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) have been used to visually format the pages displayed on this site. However, visitors can choose to override any formatting specified in the CSS, by turning off the CSS in the browser's options or preference settings. In this case, plain web pages, in rendered in standard HTML will be displayed. Alternatively, visitors may choose to view pages using their own user-defined style sheet, customized to meet their individual needs. Internet Explorer 4.+ allows a user to access a CSS file locally to override styles authored by a site's creator. For more information please visit the Web-Savvy site.

Images on this site include short text descriptions (ALT text). This text is useful for people who use screen readers or web browsers that do not display graphics.

Navigating ISAAC

There are several ways to navigate the ISAAC site.

Navigation Bars

Each page on the ISAAC site includes a main navigation bar that provides links to each of the main sections on the site, as well as links to the "Site Map" and contact information page

Finding information

There are four ways to find information on the ISAAC site:

  • Menus - Browse through the information on the site using the main ISAAC navigation bars.
  • Site Index - Browse a list of ISAAC pages. To access the list, select Site Index at the left hand side of any page.
  • Search Page - Find ISAAC pages that contain the keywords you specify. This is useful when you can't find the topic you are looking for using the navigation bars or Site Index,
  • "Hierarchical Navigation" - Content pages in each section include a hierarchical list of links to the pages you have visited in reaching the current location in the site. To retrace your steps, select the appropriate link in the hierarchical list that precedes the main content of the page.
