ISAAC - the International Society for AAC - works to improve the life of every child and adult with speech difficulties. ISAAC members want everyone in the world to know about AAC.
ISAAC started in 1983 and has thousands of members in 50 countries. 14 countries have groups called Chapters, in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, French speaking countries and regions, German speaking countries and regions, Ireland, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands and Flanders, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. ISAAC members are people who use AAC, their families, therapists, teachers, doctors, researchers, and people who make communication aids.
AAC describes the many ways to help people who cannot speak or write - things like electronic talking boxes, computers, books and boards with pictures or letters, or sign language.
Some people need to use AAC because they are born with disabilities like cerebral palsy. Other people get disabilities when they are older because they have an accident or an illness. People who use AAC go to school and to work, they get married and have children. There are some famous people who use AAC – Professor Stephen Hawking uses AAC to lecture around the world.
There are many people in the world who cannot speak and who do not know about AAC. This is because some countries do not have much money or anyone who understands how much AAC could help the people who cannot speak. ISAAC is working hard to tell people in every country about AAC.
