What we do

ISAAC and all the people who belong to ISAAC share a hope that AAC will be recognised (known) and valued and used everywhere in the world.
ISAAC does projects and makes information packs for people anywhere in the world who cannot speak.
These are some of the things that ISAAC has done…….
In August 2006, over 600 delegates from 40 countries attended the 12th Biennial Conference of ISAAC. It was held beside the famous Rhine river in Dusseldorf, Germany. The conference opened with a performance of music and art by young people using AAC. They worked together for 2 days before the conference and thrilled the delegates as they played. Some countries that are new to AAC, such as Nepal, Nigeria, Guinea Bisseau and the Gambia, sent people to the conference.
- ISAAC wants people who use AAC to make plans for what ISAAC will do and how ISAAC will do these things. There is a special job called the "leadership chair" for someone who uses AAC. This person goes to the meetings which run ISAAC - the 'Executive Committee' and the 'Board of ISAAC'.
- A book called "Beneath the Surface", written by people who use AAC, has been published (made and sold).
People in countries which are starting to use AAC have had the money to join ISAAC paid by someone in another country.
- ISAAC has published (made and sold) books about AAC and these are being made in the languages of many countries. The book 'Communication Without Speech' is a basic introduction to AAC and is available in Italian, Polish and Spanish as well as English. The book ‘Waves of Words’ is about learning to read and write if you are born without being able to speak. It is also translated into French.
- ISAAC has a research meeting every two years so that new and better ways will be found to help people who cannot speak.
- There have been conferences in India, Poland, South Africa and Brazil. The 13th conference will be in Montreal. It will be the 25th birthday of ISAAC.
- Money paid to join ISAAC, from conferences, from selling books and special events, allows ISAAC to do projects and help people around the world. Sometimes companies also give money to help with special projects.
- In 2006 ISAAC was granted NGO special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. This means ISAAC is able to attend international conferences on disability that are organised by the UN and help to influence the policy of Governments around the world on meeting the needs of persons who cannot speak.
