ISAAC Series: Volume 1
Written by: Anne Warrick
This book was made available through a generous donation from the Harmonize for Speech Fund, Ontario District Association of Chapters of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., The Rick Hansen Foundation, through the Ontario Neurotrauma Institute and AbleNet Inc.
This handbook takes a straightforward and practical approach to helping people find the best ways to be understood, and therefore to more fully take part in their communities. It was inspired by AAC users and is written for them, as well as for their teachers and caregivers.
The book documents the basic tenets of communication interaction, outlines the questions to ask before you start AAC, explores the barriers to AAC in a variety of settings, and finally, describes rudimentary steps and solutions to a variety of communication challenges. Stopping short of high-tech answers such as computer generated speech, (and excluding sign language for the deaf), its focus is on communication boards, books, eyegaze techniques, and other methods that can be adapted, as author Anne Warrick says, "by parents, relatives, community workers, neighbours and friends in any village or city in the world."
Its international flavour is derived from the author's experiences and contacts in Europe, Asia, South America and Australia, all of which convinced her of the universality of the challenges faced by those who communicate without speech. She includes many examples of people around the world, their specific situations and how practical approaches have been developed by those who care for and about them. Examples of recording forms and references to other resources on the subject, listed in the appendices, add to the usefulness of the book.
"Communication Without Speech" is an essential resource for anyone interested in augmentative communication.
